Petra : The stone city

Petra was the capital of the old nabataean kingdom and is located in the current Jordan. Your name means stone in Greek.

The surprising Petra are their buildings carved directly into the stone of the place, and hence its name.

By the splendor of its buildings and the uniqueness of its construction, is regarded as one of the new wonders of the world.

Petra was founded in the year 312 bc, when the nabataeans settle to the place and they choose to do its capital. Around 64 ADC was annexed to the Roman Empire, although he had a period of relative autonomy.

Was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. Among its marvelous buildings are the passageway that leads to the lost city, and that was popularized by movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Read the rest of this entry »
