Turkey Holidays Must Include A Visit To Historical Izmir

Izmir is Turkey’s third largest city and is located near a narrow gulf in the Aegean Sea. Cruise ships, yachts and other private boats can be seen speckling the coastline from the gorgeous beaches. The coastal area is brimming with activities and visitors can enjoy many restaurants, shops and attractions.

But Izmir has more than all the modern day marvels that a town this size can provide. Turkey holidays to this area must include visiting the ancient sites and cities in the area that have shaped the history of the human race.

Izmir is the home of the cities of the Seven Churches of the Apocalypse. The Temple of Artemis is located here and is one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Recent finds have uncovered many Neolithic artefacts in the area, proving that Izmir (formerly Symrna) has been actively occupied for the last 8500 years. A day trip to visit the Agora (city square) is a step back in time to the ancient Roman period and all its splendour.

Pergamon is a town located about an hour’s drive from Izmir. Here people have lived since pre-historic times. Ancient temples dedicated to Zeus and Athena along with an ancient library and other structures are scattered throughout the area. It is a breathtaking experience.

The many museums located throughout Izmir will take you through the history of civilization. This area has always been a developed area throughout the many different dynasties and time periods. The Ephesus Museum has an astounding collection of relics, including statues of Artemis and a 3rd century fresco of Socrates.

The Izmir bazaar is filled with culturally rich items for sale. Hand painted silk, dried figs and a host of other items can be purchased in this open air market. The night life in and around the bazaar is amazing. Bars and clubs, offering the finest Turkish foods and drinks are lively each and every night.

Enjoying the wonderful climate and clean beaches in the area is easy. However, in a place that is so rich in culture and history, you must make the time to visit these exciting places that make Turkey so distinctive.
